We went to a funky pub in Greenwich for a Cub planning meeting on Wednesday. Summary in notes (mostly highlighting what they do differently)
- They do a 2 year program - a bit like what the Beavers do. But they plan only for 6 months in advance.
- One leader will lead every night. Like same Akela, but we've divvied the weeks up evenly so one week I run the badge, the next Steve done, the next Richard does, the next Pete does, so on so forth.
- Every week it is badgework but sometimes multiple badges at once and never the same badge two weeks running. For example, when they visit the community gardens in Greenwich for part of their 'world challenge' badge, it will also go towards their 'local knowledge' badge. I'm doing the arts and books badge. So one overlapping thing is designing a front cover for their favourite book... this goes towards both.
In terms of camping...
They do 3 Cub camps a year.
-One in Feb that I'm missing as I'm in Leeds for the weekend. But that is an indoor camp somewhere outside of London.
-The next is in May and it is called PGL. This is one of those activity centre things with high ropes, shooting, abseiling... Steve was saying how great it is because for every 8 kids who go, you get a free leader, and you basically turn up and hand the kids over to the instructors, and that's your job done. There's even a bar at the activity centre! PGL costs the kids about £100 each for 2/3 days but they really like it so people pay. Also, it's only once every 2 years. (Side note: Richard was saying how his daughter went there with school last year but it cost £300 because the school won't get charity rates).
-Then there is a district camp in June. This is Scout, Cub, Beaver and at the shared site down in Downe. Only one night. But I think this is the closest I we get to our camping.
As for actual Scout camps, I have no idea. It seems that literally only the Scout leaders go to them and nobody else is even really aware of when they are.
